RICHMOND, Va. – Four members of the James Madison baseball team received All-Colonial Athletic Association honors for the 2017 season, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior right fielder
Adam Sisk garnered Second Team recognition, while redshirt senior first baseman
Brett Johnson and freshman utility player
Fox Semones were each named to the Third Team. Semones joined freshman right-handed pitcher
Kevin Kelly on the All-Rookie Team as well, while Johnson was honored for his work off the field on the All-Academic Team.
"I'm proud and excited for these young men; these are well-deserved honors that reflect their hard work all year long," Head Coach
Marlin Ikenberry said. "
Adam Sisk is one of the hardest working players I've ever coached and he's earned this recognition. I'm excited for
Brett Johnson to end his great college career on and off the field with these honors. Finally, our future is bright with
Kevin Kelly and
Fox Semones getting well-deserved awards."
A staple of the JMU lineup, Sisk was the only Duke to start and play in every game of the 2017 season and led the team in multiple offensive categories. His .337 batting average, 55 runs, 108 total bases, .449 on-base percentage and 14 stolen bases were all tops for JMU, while his 11 home runs and 32 walks were both tied for the team lead. A consistent performer, Sisk also led the CAA in on-base percentage. In the 11-3 win over No. 11 Coastal Carolina, the reigning national champion, Sisk hit a pair of three-run home runs.
JMU's premier power threat, Johnson was named to the Third Team for the second time in his career. The first baseman matched Sisk's 11 homers to tie for the team lead and led the Dukes with 42 RBIs and a .583 slugging percentage. Johnson also notched a .301 average and 11 doubles, scored 32 runs and drew 28 walks. He was named
Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and CAA Player of the Week after slugging three home runs for a career-high eight RBIs in the 25-9 win over UNC Asheville on Feb. 25. The trio of homers tied a school record. Johnson received All-Academic honors after finishing his master's degree in education with a 4.0 GPA.
Semones burst into JMU's lineup in mid-March, winning CAA Rookie of the Week after his first two career starts in the series against NJIT, where he went 7-for-13 at the plate with five runs and four RBIs. The freshman hit his first career home run, a walk-off bomb to left, in the 6-5 win over Delaware on March 25. A versatile athlete, Semones saw time at second base, third base, left field and center field. He even made three pitching appearances, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Semones ended his freshman campaign batting .316 with six doubles, one triple, three home runs, 27 runs scored and 21 RBIs.
Kelly made an immediate impact in his freshman season as an effective reliever in the back end of the bullpen. In 24 appearances, he led the Dukes with five wins and a sparkling 2.91 ERA, striking out 38 batters in 34 innings of work. His 4.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio (38 Ks, 8 BBs) was the best of any JMU pitcher. Kelly earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on March 7 after earning back-to-back wins over Buffalo with 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief. On March 24, he earned his first career save by throwing the final four innings of a 12-8 win over Delaware, striking out seven Blue Hens.
