TUCSON, Ariz. – Right-handed pitcher
Kevin Kelly and utility player
Fox Semones of James Madison have been named
Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-Americans, the organization announced Wednesday.
Both players were previously honored on the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team, while Semones was named to the All-CAA Third Team.
Kelly made an immediate impact in his freshman season as an effective reliever in the back end of the bullpen. In 24 appearances, he led the Dukes with five wins and a sparkling 2.91 ERA, striking out 38 batters in 34 innings of work. His 4.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio (38 Ks, 8 BBs) was the best of any JMU pitcher. Kelly earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on March 7 after earning back-to-back wins over Buffalo with 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief. On March 24, he earned his first career save by throwing the final four innings of a 12-8 win over Delaware, striking out seven Blue Hens.
Semones burst into JMU's lineup in mid-March, winning CAA Rookie of the Week after his first two career starts in the series against NJIT, where he went 7-for-13 at the plate with five runs and four RBIs. The freshman hit his first career home run, a walk-off bomb to left, in the 6-5 win over Delaware on March 25. A versatile athlete, Semones saw time at second base, third base, left field and center field. He even made three pitching appearances, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Semones ended his freshman campaign batting .316 with six doubles, one triple, three home runs, 27 runs scored and 21 RBIs.
Kelly and Semones are the first JMU Freshmen All-Americans since junior shortstop
Kyle McPherson was also honored by
Collegiate Baseball in 2015, and the first time the Dukes have had multiple Freshmen All-Americans since 2008 (Turner Phelps, Kevin Munson, Trevor Knight).
