HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball had its six-game win streak snapped on Friday afternoon as they fell, 8-2, to Quinnipiac in the series opener at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes, who haven't lost since the series opening weekend to then-No. 11 Florida State, fall to 6-4 while the Bobcats move to 2-5.
Â
Graduate student
Justin Showalter got the start for the Dukes, going 1.2 innings and picking up a strikeout. Freshman
Bryce Suters led JMU at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day.
Â
How It Happened
Quinnipiac struck first, hitting three straight singles to start the game off to get its first run and then using an RBI groundout for the second.
Â
JMU didn't waste much time to get back in the game, as redshirt junior
Trevon Dabney led off the home half of the first with a solo home run to left field. The Dukes were able to tie the game at 2-2 on a
Kyle Novak sacrifice fly after redshirt sophomore
Chase DeLauter was hit by pitch and then advanced to third on a double off the bat of freshman
Fenwick Trimble.
Â
A quick response was prompted by the Bobcats, stringing together four base hits to begin the second inning and scoring three runs before they recorded the first out of the inning. Quinnipiac would pick up their third RBI single of the inning after that out to make it a 6-2 game, and would hold onto a lead they've never let go.
Â
The Bobcats added two more runs in the sixth to make it 8-2, while the Dukes were able to get a runner into scoring position in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Unfortunately, JMU wasn't able to push any runs across in those innings and Quinnipiac held on to won.
Â
Brandyn Garcia started for Quinnipiac and went five innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.
