Dave Lombardo, the only coach in program history, announced his 25th Anniversary team featuring a handful of players that have left a lasting impact on the program beyond their four years at JMU.

Every two weeks leading up to the 25th Anniversary celebration game, a 7 p.m. match Friday, Oct. 24, against William & Mary, one position group will be highlighted.

This week's spotlight is on the nine defenders – Rachel Chupein, Lisa Cioffi, Jen Cuesta,
Teri Maykoski, Beth McNamara, Jamie Miller, Chantel Schwandt, Katy Swindells and
Becky Sparks.
"Defense has been the cornerstone of our success over the years," Lombardo said. "We have counted on them to be the backbone of the team that would stop the opposition's offense and were the first line to fuel ours. The saying goes that defense wins championships. These players are proof of it."

Rachel Chupein was a member of the Dukes' back line from 2005-08. After her time as a player, Chupein joined the team's coaching staff, serving as an assistant from 2009-13. In her time with JMU, she served as a team captain her junior and senior seasons and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team in her final year. Chupein participated in two NCAA Tournaments while with JMU.

Lisa Cioffi was a JMU defender from 1995-98, making an NCAA Tournament appearance every season she played for the Dukes. Cioffi holds the school record for most games played (90) and is tied for 25th in all-time assists (10). After her rookie year in 1995, she was named All-CAA and NSCAA All-Region.

Jen Cuesta played for the Dukes from 1993-96, playing in two NCAA Tournaments along the way. In both her junior and senior seasons, Cuesta was named to All-CAA, VaSID All-State and NSCAA All-Region teams. Additionally, she was named a NSCAA All-American after her senior season and played in the Umbro Select Senior All-Star Game.

Teri Maykoski was a member of the Dukes from 2005-09 and a volunteer assistant coach under Lombardo from 2012-13. In her time at JMU, Maykoski played in two NCAA Tournaments and was named to the 2009 All-CAA Tournament team. The two-time team defensive MVP (2006 and 2009) was also named All-CAA three times (2006, 2008 and 2009) and to the VaSID All-State team twice (2006 and 2008). She was also recognized as an All-Region performer by the NSCAA in both 2008 and 2009 and by
Soccer Buzz in 2008.

Beth McNamara played at JMU from 1998-2002 before being drafted into the WUSA League in 2003. A two-time NCAA Tournament participant with the Dukes, McNamara is tied for 13th on the program's all-time assists chart (17). She was named a NSCAA All-Region performer in 1999, was named to the All-CAA team in 1998, 1999 and 2002, the VaSID All-State team in 1999 and 2001 and the CAA All-Tournament team in 2001. McNamara earned Academic All-District honors in 2001 and 2002.

Jamie Miller played on the JMU back line from 1998-2001, ending her career as the 2001 CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Miller played in two NCAA Tournaments while with the Dukes and was named to the 2001 CAA All-Tournament team. Her performance in the last two years of her career earned her All-CAA and VaSID All-State honors. In 2001, she was named a NSCAA All-Region performer.

Chantel Schwandt played a key part on the inaugural JMU women's soccer team and was the team's defensive MVP for every season that she played (1990-93). A team captain her junior and senior seasons, Scwandt is currently tied for 23rd in JMU history for all-time points (42), tied for 16th in all-time goals (16) and tied for 25th in all-time assists (10).

Katy Swindells, a defender for the Dukes from 2001-2004, is the only player in school history to be named All-CAA four times (2001-04). A two-time NCAA Tournament participant, Swindells also earned VaSID All-State honors three times (2002-04) and NSCAA All-Region honors twice (2002 and 2004).

Becky Sparks is the most recent defender on the 25th Anniversary Team, having played from 2010-13. After winning the 2013 CAA regular season championship, Sparks polished off a successful career with a earning the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award. Sparks was named to the CAA All-Rookie team in 2010 before being selected as an All-CAA performer from 2011-13. Following her junior year, VaSID named her to the All-State team and College Soccer Madness named her an All-CAA performer. After her senior season, Sparks again earned VaSID honors but added NSCAA All-Region honors as well. Sparks made one NCAA Tournament appearance in her career and sits tied for 10th on JMU's all-time assists leaderboard (18).
