HARRISONBURG, Va. – The James Madison men's tennis team has signed three to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, Head Coach Steve Secord announced Monday. Tate Steinour, Damon Roberts and Austin Simonsen will join the Dukes in 2016-17.
"We're really excited," Secord said. "All three guys are going to bring that team concept that they really like and enjoy, and they are going to work hard to help JMU with our goals in the conference and beyond."
Tate Steinour hails from Hilton Head, S.C., where he attends Hilton Head High School and trains at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy. Rated a three-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.Com, Steinour led the Seahawks to the state AAA tennis championship in 2014. He was named the 2014 Lowcountry Island Packet Tennis Player of the Year and earned all-state honors for individual play after being named Second Team All-Metro for Central Virginia Boy's Tennis in 2013. He is also an honor roll student and varsity basketball player.
"Tate has a great family and is a great person," Secord stated. "He'll fit in academically. On the court, he has the grit and determination to get better."
Damon Roberts currently lives in France and attends the Eysseric Tennis Academy, though he has lived in the United States, Singapore, Australia and Japan. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the French National Under-16 Indoor Tournament and went undefeated at the No. 1 singles position while playing for his club team at the French Pre-National division in 2015. Also during 2015, he won the TC Mougins tournament, TC Cabris tournament and TC La Roquette Sur Siagne tournament.
"Damon has been focused on playing college tennis since he joined the academy and I first met him," Assistant Coach Nicolai Nonnenbroich said. "We know he's going to be ready to compete as soon as he joins the team, which will be a big plus for us. He'll understand the pressure of the matches and the team environment, which he's very much looking forward to being a part of."
August Simonsen comes to JMU from Norway. He is a two-time Norwegian junior doubles champion and is a member of the No. 3 men's doubles team in Norway. In singles, he is rated No. 2 in Norway among players born in 1997 and has been a finalist for the Norwegian junior singles championship. He is also a four-time mixed doubles champion, winning three junior titles and one adult title.
"August is great," Secord said. "Academically, he's going to fit in really well and he's very eager to do well. With tennis, to take it to the next level, he's been playing in futures tournaments…I think the sky's the limit."
