Sam Lofton and sophomore
Ashley Herndon spent the 2014 season with the Washington Spirit Reserves of the W-League for Women's Soccer, helping their team to a 10-0-2 record and a runner-up finish in the championship tournament.

Lofton and Herndon ranked third and fourth on the team in minutes played, respectively. Herndon, a forward, also ranked first on the team with 35 shots and tied for first with six goals and 15 points. Lofton scored three goals with one assist from her defensive position.

The Spirit Reserves punched their ticket to the tournament by dominating the Braddock Road Stars Elite 6-0 on July 18. JMU's tandem started the rout when Herndon scored off a Lofton assist in the ninth minute. Herndon continued to be active throughout the game, adding another six shots and three assists.

In the semifinal round, the No. 3 seed Spirit Reserves took down No. 2 Ottawa Fury 2-1 on penalty kicks. Herndon again scored the game's first goal in the 63
rd minute, but the Fury forced extra minutes with a goal during stoppage time. However, the Spirit Reserves bounced back to force and win penalties despite three close calls during overtime.

The victory over Ottawa set up a rematch between Washington and the defending champion LA Blues in the championship game. LA defeated Washington in the semifinal round in 2013 before winning the title that year. The result did not change in 2014, with the Blues winning 6-1 on Sunday for their fourth championship in seven seasons.

The W-League is the first and longest-standing women's soccer league in North America. The 2014 W-League campaign featured 25 teams in four regional conferences playing 10-12 regular season matches. Featuring current and former international and professional stars, the W-League also provides elite amateurs the opportunity to compete while maintaining their eligibility as college student-athletes. James Madison begins its 2014 campaign with a home exhibition match vs. Bucknell on Aug. 16. The Dukes then host the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational Aug. 22 vs. Xavier at 7 p.m. and Aug. 24 vs. Massachusetts at 2 p.m.
