JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – James Madison's pitchers gave up a combined five hits in its two games to pick up a pair of shutout victories at the Osprey Invitational on Saturday at the UNF Softball Complex. Game 1: James Madison 2, Maine 0
Freshman pitcher Megan Good threw a complete game and James Madison used a pair of runs in the fifth to down Maine 2-0 in the first of two games on the day.
Â
Good (1-0), making her first collegiate start in the circle, gave up just one hit and two walks and struck out 14 batters, two off JMU's single-game record, to lead the Dukes (1-2) to their first victory of the season.
Â
Junior first baseman Jailyn Ford went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored while freshmen infielders Jessica Mrozek and Morgan Tolle both drove in one run apiece in the win.
Â
JMU's bats heated up in the fifth inning, where it would break the tie. Ford and Good led off the top half of the frame with singles to right center to put a runner in scoring position. Two batters later, Mrozek singled to left and Ford scored from second to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead. Tolle doubled the advantage to 2-0 on the ensuing at-bat, with a single of her own that brought home Good from third.
Â
The Black Bears (1-3) never mustered a threat offensively as they only put a runner on second base on two separate occasions early in the game. After walking her second and final batter in the bottom of the third, Good sat down 15 consecutive Maine players to earn her first win.
Â
Game 2: James Madison 1, Jacksonville State 0
