OXFORD, MISS. - SophomoreÂ
Maddisen Cox sits tied atop the leaderboards to lead the James Madison women's golf team after the first round of the 2016 Rebel Intercollegiate on Friday at the Par-72, 6,323-yard Ole Miss Golf Course.
Cox (-1, T-1st) carded a first-round score of 71, which tied her career-low for a single 18-hole round. She did so thanks to 15 pars, two birdies and only one bogey. The Easley, S.C., native is looking to top her last outing, in which she placed sixth at the Morehead State University Citrus Challenge.
SophomoreÂ
Laura Gomez-Ruiz (+2, T-12th) is just outside the top 10 after carding a 74 with pars on every hole on the front nine and finishing strong with a birdie at 18.
As a team, JMU is tied for eighth out of 15 teams at 19-over par. Boasting three golfers who carded a 74 or better on Friday, the Troy sits atop the team leaderboard at nine-over par.
FreshmanÂ
Jordan McKelvin (+8, T-61st) started well with a birdie on the first hole of the day while seniorÂ
Kelsey Solan (+10, T-72nd) and freshmanÂ
Carley Cox (+15, 87th) rounded out the scoring for the Dukes. Joining McKelvin at eight-over par to tie for 61st in the field of 90 athletes is freshmanÂ
Katie Turk, who is competing as an individual this weekend.
"Today was a solid day," Head CoachÂ
Sarah Sargent said. "Maddy was great and finished out her round under par. We need to tighten some of our approach shots up for tomorrow and we can move up the leaderboard."
The Dukes are back on the course tomorrow morning to tee off for round two of the Rebel Intercollegiate.
