James Madison Associate A.D. for Integrated Health and Sports Performance
Tom Kuster on Monday announced the hiring of Courtney Gallagher to serve as sports dietitian. In the role, she will be an integral part of building JMU's young sports nutrition program and will serve as a key member of the integrated health and sports performance teams, which focus on overall student-athlete wellness.
"I'm extremely excited to have Courtney Gallagher join us at JMU as our new sports dietitian," Kuster said. "Sports nutrition has clearly been identified as one of our key objectives within our Athletics Strategic plan, and I believe her commitment, enthusiasm and prior experiences at Buffalo and Georgia will serve her well as she works to build our sports nutrition program at JMU. Our mission with our sports nutrition program is to provide student-athletes with cutting-edge nutrition knowledge in order to successfully fuel training and conditioning, decrease risk of illness and injury and achieve optimal recovery between workouts. I'm thrilled to have Courtney on board working with our student-athletes and coaches towards that end."

We will be committed to providing excellent nutrition services and further developing the sports nutrition program into one that sets the standard in college athletics."
Gallagher comes to JMU from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of the sports nutrition department. She worked primarily with women's volleyball, men's tennis, softball and the equestrian teams and provided nutrition counseling and recommendations to student-athletes.
A 2013 graduate of Cornell, Gallagher was a Division I athlete for four years as the goalie on their women's lacrosse team. She graduated from Cornell with a degree in nutritional sciences. She then earned her master's in clinical nutrition in 2015 at SUNY Buffalo, and during this time worked as a graduate assistant sports nutritionist within their athletic program. She also served as a Dietetic Internship Advisory Board Student Member at Buffalo.
Gallagher is a registered dietitian and a three-year member of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association.
At JMU Gallagher will be responsible for the development, implementation and administration of a comprehensive sports nutrition program for JMU Athletics. Her primary focus will include the education and counseling of individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; coordinating with the JMU Team Physician,
Dr. Kent Diduch, to provide medical nutrition therapy when necessary; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services; serving as a food and nutrition resource for student-athletes, sport coaches, sports medicine staff, and strength/conditioning staff; and providing sports nutrition education for athletic teams and coaches.
Gallagher will also serve as a key member of the Integrated Health and Sports Performance Unit at JMU, which is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of professionals committed to assisting student-athletes realize their full potential, minimize risk of injury, achieve competitive excellence and have an exemplary student-athlete experience at JMU. Additionally she will serve as a member of the multidisciplinary team of health care providers for at-risk student-athletes, the Dukes C.A.R.E. (Care and Recovery Enhancement) Team.
