HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis has added Jona Roka to the roster for the 2016-17 season, Head Coach James Bryce announced Friday.
Roka is a five-star recruit and is ranked the No. 1 player in Virginia by the Tennis Recruiting Network. She ranks ninth in the mid-atlantic region and 68th nationally.
"Jona has consistently been the top player in Virginia over the last few years," Bryce said. "She is the highest ranked recruit to sign with JMU in the last 10 years and will be an exceptional addition to a talented roster."
Hailing from Lorton, Va., Roka is an honor roll student at Hayfield Secondary School. The district champion holds 22 wins against rated opponents, including a 16-7 mark against four and five star recruits, and advanced to the finals of the Girls' 18 singles bracket at the USTA/MAS Championship Super 660. She also earned the 2011 USTA Mid-Atlantic Junior Sportsmanship award.
"Jona is one of the most respectful junior players I have interacted with, and her character is exactly what we look for in our future players and current roster," Bryce added. "Next year, our roster will be the largest it has been, which will make us stronger and provide healthy competition at practice. I am looking forward to having Jona be a part of the team and working towards our goals for the program."
In 2015-16, the Dukes advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship match for the first time in program history. They posted an 18-7 overall mark, their highest win total since hitting the 20-win mark in 1989-90.
