HARRISONBURG, Va. - Former James Madison women's soccer star Sam Lofton (2010-14) has signed a professional contract with Sünnanå SK of Elitettan, the second-highest division of Swedish women's soccer.
Â
"I'm very happy for Sam that she gets to follow her dream and play professionally," Head Coach Dave Lombardo said. "Soccer in Europe is really part of the culture and a wonderful adventure for her. I'm excited that she's gotten this opportunity."
Sünnanå SK, which is located in Skellefteå, Sweden and has spent much of its existence in the top two levels of Swedish women's soccer, signed Lofton after a standout career at JMU and time in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) with both the Boston Breakers and Portland Thorns.
Â
The Breakers selected Lofton with the second pick in the third round of the 2015 NWSL Draft, after her final season at JMU in 2014 saw her post career highs in goals (3), game-winning goals (3), assists (7) and points (13) while starting all 20 games for the Dukes. With 12 career assists, Lofton finished her career tied for 25th on the program's all-time chart.
Â
Following her highly-successful senior season, Lofton was named a First Team All-CAA performer, Second Team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honoree, First Team ECAC All-Star honoree and First Team VaSID All-State performer. Throughout the season, Lofton climbed the ranks on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 20 in the Colonial Athletic Association. She started the season unranked, only to check in at No. 16 midway through the season and finish the campaign as the No. 6 player in the conference.
Â
This year's edition of the Dukes continues the opening weekend of the 2016 season with a 2 p.m. bout against Northwestern on Sunday, August 21, at University Park. Live audio coverage will be available on MadiZone HD SportsNet provided by the JMU Alumni Association.
