HARRISONBURG, Va. - Rematches against historic rivals such as Old Dominion, George Mason and Richmond highlight James Madison's 2016-17 men's basketball non-conference schedule, as announced by Head Coach
Louis Rowe on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Dukes will open the 2016-17 campaign, their first with Rowe at the helm of his alma mater, with a trip to Norfolk, Va. to face Old Dominion on November 11. JMU has not played the Monarchs since the 2012-13 season, when it handed ODU a pair of losses.
Â
"We're very excited about the schedule we've set up for this season," Rowe said. "We're happy to have some traditional rivals like Richmond, ODU and George Mason back. This is also a schedule that is going to challenge us and make us better while giving the fans some exciting games to watch."
Â
JMU will open its home slate just two days later, when it returns to the Convocation Center on Nov. 13 to take on Rice. The Dukes and Owls have never faced each other in men's basketball.
Â
For the fifth consecutive season, JMU will face in-state rival Richmond as part of its non-conference schedule, as the Spiders travel to Harrisonburg for a Dec. 20 bout. The Dukes are riding a two-game win streak over Richmond after picking up an 87-75 win at the Robins Center to open this past season. The Dukes will also continue their series against George Mason when they head to Fairfax on November 26.
Â
JMU will travel to Montana State on Nov. 18, marking the first time the two teams have faced each other since 1996-97, before playing host Texas Southern (Nov. 21) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Nov. 23) in the week leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Â
The trip to George Mason kicks off a five-game road trip, as JMU travels to play Charlotte (Nov. 30), Longwood (Dec. 3) and Western Michigan (Dec. 10), before wrapping up the away slate at Appalachian State on Dec. 17, marking the first time the Dukes have faced the Mountaineers since 2005-06.
Â
The Dukes will return home for the final three games of non-conference play, following their bout with Richmond by welcoming UMBC (Dec. 23) and Eastern Mennonite (Dec. 28) to the Convo before Colonial Athletic Association play begins on Dec. 31. JMU's complete conference slate will be announced by the league at a later date.
