GREENVILLE, N.C. – Powered by four home runs to outscore opponents 21 to 2, No. 13/14 James Madison (21-3) swept Saturday's slate topping (RV) Pitt 11-0 and East Carolina 10-2 inside the ECU Softball Complex.
The Dukes slugged at a .764 percentage over Saturday's games as third baseman Madyson Moran led the Dukes going 3-for-6 with two home runs and a triple to drive home seven runs. Freshman pitcher Odicci Alexander picked up four RBIs after going 3-for-7 with a home run at the plate. Left fielder Cambry Arnold was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Alexander earned the victory over the Panthers (14-8) allowing no runs and just two hits over five innings. The right-hander struck out six in the outing to improve to 6-3.
Megan Good (14-0) remained undefeated in the circle with a win over ECU (14-11). Good allowed one run, one walk and three hits in the contest as her scoreless inning streak came to a close after 70.1 consecutive innings. The right-hander fanned 10 in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe pitched the final inning allowing one run off two hits.
The Dukes opened the contest against the Panthers by loading the bases after singles by first baseman Morgan Tolle and Arnold and a walk issued to Good. The Panthers made a force out at home on right fielder Taylor Newton's fielder's choice, but Alexander delivered with a single through the left side to give JMU a 1-0 lead. Shortstop Niki Prince's sacrifice fly scored a second run before Moran tripled to clear the bases to give the Dukes a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Alexander added to the lead in the top of the third with a solo home run to left field before JMU extended the lead to 6-0 after Tolle scored on a bunt single from Arnold.
The bats came alive in the top of the fifth as Prince drew a walk ahead of Moran who slugged the second home run of the game. After sophomores Paige Mitchell drew a walk and Jenny Behan singled through the left side, senior Casie Hill knocked her first home run of her career to give JMU an 11-0 advantage in the run-rule victory.
Against the Pirates, the Dukes opened up the game with first-inning scoring. Three consecutive singles from Arnold, Good and Newton plated a run before a sacrifice fly from Alexander gave JMU a 2-0 advantage.
ECU and the Dukes traded four scoreless innings before JMU broke open the game in the top of the sixth. Tolle drew a leadoff walk before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Arnold. Good placed a perfectly place bunt single to put runners on the corners before Tolle scored on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back singles from Newton and Alexander plated another JMU run before Moran cleared the bases with her second home run of the day with a rocket to left field to extend the lead to 7-0.
Good's scoreless inning streak came to a close in the bottom of the sixth as she allowed a solo home run, the first homer she has allowed this season, but the Dukes responded in the top of the seventh. After back-to-back walks issued to Arnold and Good, Newton doubled to center field to plate a run before Prince drove home two with a single to right center to push the lead to 10-1.
ECU tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh with a second solo home run, but the Dukes shut the door to remain undefeated in Greenville.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"We did a nice job today with out at bats for the most part. It was tough that second game. We were hitting the ball around and had good at bats, but we left the bases loaded. We left a lot of runners on base, but we had a lot of hits. Megan [Good] did a really nice job. She gave up the home run against a free-swinging batter. The ball just didn't move that time. Other than that, she did a real nice job and our defense played extremely well."
BOMBS AWAY
For the second time this season, the Dukes had homered three times in a single game as Odicci Alexander, Madyson Moran and Casie Hill all knock dingers against Pitt. The Dukes first achieved the feat in an 8-3 victory over Yale during the Tiger Invitational. Moran and Alexander are tied for the team lead with four home runs each. As a team, the Dukes have slugged 17 homers to lead the Colonial Athletic Association.
