Mark Gabriele was a top performer on JMU swimming and diving teams that won four straight Colonial Athletic Association championships and three Eastern College Athletic Conference titles. He won eight individual CAA titles and was a member of relay teams that won 14 conference crowns.
He was a four-time CAA winner in the 100-meter butterfly and won conference championships in the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley. He won Eastern titles in both butterfly events and the individual medley as a junior and in the 100-meter butterfly as a senior, competed at the NCAA Championships in all three events, and was the outstanding performer at the Eastern meet in 1994 and the CAA meet in 1995.
He received his Ph.D. in neurobiology and anatomy from Wake Forest and returned to JMU as a faculty member. He competed for the Dukes during a period during which JMU won nine of 10 CAA titles.
