James Madison University promotes responsible and safe tailgating. We believe we have the best fans in the country and want to continue the great game day experience that takes place on JMU Football game days. To ensure a positive experience for everyone and the safety of our football fans, the following policies will be enforced.
Tailgating Policies
- These policies only apply to Saturday home games. In the event of a weekday game please reference specific communication from the Athletic Department regarding that games policies and procedures.
- Reserved parking lots will open for parking and tailgating at 8:00 a.m. on game day when the kickoff time is 6pm or earlier. The lots will open at 12pm for parking and tailgating when kickoff times are set after 6pm.
- Tailgating in general parking lots will not be permitted until 4 hours before kick-off and must cease at game time.
- Tailgating in reserved parking lots may begin at 8:00 a.m. for kick off times 6pm and before. Any kickoff times set after 6pm, tailgating will begin at 12pm. All tailgating must cease 2 hours after the end of the game.
- All vehicles left in a reserved lot after 10 p.m. on the day before the game are subject to towing.
- Reserved lots are only accessed by displaying a valid football game day parking pass. A valid parking pass must be on display while occupying any reserved space.
- Reserved lots are not accessible for dropping off and unloading.
- Saving parking spaces is not permitted.
- Tailgating is permitted directly behind your vehicle and cannot occupy an additional parking space or impede on the traffic flow within the lot.
- Canopies
- Canopies should be pop-up style and not be staked with anchors but secured with appropriate weights
- Size of canopies should not exceed 10’x10’ without advance written permission from Athletics Facilities and Events Office.
- Canopies may not be located on sidewalks, pedestrian/bike paths, or vehicle travel lanes.
- Canopies are intended for recreational use and not for commercial purposes unless approved in advance by JMU Sports Properties.
- Canopies intended for use in designated tailgating locations must fit within your parking spot and not extend into additional spots or traffic lanes.
- Canopies must be completely dismantled no later than two (2) hours after the completion of the game.
- Canopies and other tailgate items remaining in place after two hours following the game are subject to removal.
- Violators of game day parking policy will be ticketed and towed.
- State laws and University alcohol policies will be enforced within the tailgating lots.
- Games, activities and devices that promote excessive consumption of alcohol will not be permitted.
- External sound speakers are not permitted, including DJ's, bands, and sound systems. Loud music that disrupts tailgating will be required to be turned down.
- ATTEND THE GAME!!! While tailgating is a great opportunity to create energy and excitement before the game, please do not forget what's going on in Bridgeforth Stadium. Please show respect for your JMU athletes and athletic staff by attending the game.
- Open flames other than gas grills are NOT permitted. Grilling is not permitted in JMU parking decks. Be aware of state fire laws and bans. Charcoal grills, fire pits, and open flames are not permitted.
- Secure your tailgate area before and during the game to protect your belongings. JMU will not assume responsibility for any lost or stolen items.
- Any violation of the tailgating policy may result in the immediate termination of tailgating privileges, criminal prosecution, and/or disciplinary action.
Game Day Tailgating Locations
Many on-campus parking lots are reserved on football game day for parking and tailgating (view map) and require a parking pass for access. Reserved parking passes are available for season ticket holders who make a current Duke Club Proud and True donation. General parking lots are also available throughout campus and do not require a parking pass. Due to the high demand we currently do not have any more parking available for the 2024 football season.
Student Game Day Tailgating
A designated JMU student parking and tailgating area will be located in the R1 Lot, adjacent to D-Hub and Long Mauck Stadium. Vehicles will not be allowed access into the R1 Lot beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday and all remaining vehicles must be cleared by 6 a.m. on Saturday. Beginning at 6 a.m., any vehicle remaining in the lot will be ticketed and towed.
This lot will become available starting 4 hours before game time and will be cleared 1 hour before kickoff. To access the lot, the driver must present a valid JACard and game ticket and all passengers must also present a game ticket for entry. Any individual entering the R1 Lot on game day must present a football game ticket to gain access at one of the lot entry points. External sound speakers are not permitted, including DJ's, bands, and sound systems. Loud music that disrupts tailgating will be required to be turned down. State laws and University alcohol policies will be enforced within the tailgating lots. Games, activities and devices that promote excessive consumption of alcohol will not be permitted.

Trash and Recycling
We kindly ask our fans to clean up their tailgating area to keep our campus clean and traffic areas safe for travel. Fans are encouraged to bring their own trash bags, bags will not be provided.
During the game leave bagged trash behind your car for pick-up. Upon leaving, place bagged trash in your parking space out of the roadway.
Solicitation
No sales activities are allowed on the James Madison University campus, including any/all tailgating areas, without permission from the appropriate University office. Only James Madison University or designated representatives will be allowed to sell merchandise.
