Gary Butler was a top player on JMU men's basketball teams from 1969-72 before missing all but a part of one game of his senior season with a knee injury. He was a double-figure scorer and rebounder during each of his first three years and had career totals of 870 points and 682 rebounds.
Butler led the team in rebounding three times and in scoring once, was a two-year captain and was a team most valuable player. His 12.3 rebounds per game average in 1969-70 and his 11.2 career rebounding mark remain JMU records.
