The only JMU representative on the CAA's Silver Anniversary Team for wrestling, Coyle earned All-America status in 2000 and was named CAA Wrestling Athlete of the Year. He was a two-time CAA Champion, capturing titles in 1999 at 141 pounds and 2000 at 133 pounds. He posted a combined record of 49-15 over those two seasons, including a 15-3 mark in dual meets. That two-year ledger included eight major decisions, four technical falls, 22 falls and a 4-5 mark in NCAA Championship competition.
