Jabari Outtz hit on seven of eight free throws during the final minute, and
Dwayne Braxton had a career-high 20 points as the Dukes moved into first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 70-66 victory at Old Dominion.
Outtz put JMU in front to stay 65-63 with two free throws with 58.7 seconds left and gave the Dukes a 66-64 edge with 23.7 seconds left after Old Dominion's Michael Williams hit on one of two free throws with 36.7 seconds to play. Outtz made a steal on the possession after his free throw at the 23.7-second mark and hit on two more free throws with 12.8 and 3.2 seconds remaining.
The victory was JMU's fourth straight in league play since it dropped its conference opener and raised the Dukes' overall record to 10-5.
Braxton hit on seven of 11 shots and led a 41-point effort from JMU's reserves. He hit on two of four three-point attempts and also had five rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes. Freshman
Pat Mitchell added 13 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench for the Dukes.
JMU led 32-23 late during the first half, but Old Dominion got the final three points of the opening period and the first 10 of the final half to lead 36-32. After that four-point lead neither team led by more than three until Outtz's free throws with 12.8 seconds left gave JMU a 68-64 advantage.
JMU shot 38.3 percent overall (23-60) but had a 39-35 rebounding edge, had six three-point field goals (21 tries) and hit on 18 of 24 free throws. Old Dominion shot 46.0 percent overall (23-50) but hit on only three of 13 three-point tries and but 17 of 32 free throws (13-27 during the second half).
Also in double figures in scoring for JMU were Outtz with 13 points and
Jamar Perry with 11.
Andre McCullum led four Old Dominion players in double figures in scoring with 12 points.
