WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (1/19/2000) –
Jabari Outtz scored a JMU-career-high 28 points, including 25 during the second half and his team's last eight points, as JMU posted its first victory at William & Mary in five seasons, 76-71.
Outtz hit on eight of 13 shots, including five of six three-point attempts. He put JMU in front to stay, 59-56, with a three-pointer with 9:18 to play and had 18 of JMU's 20 points during the final 9:18.
Two of Outtz's key plays came during the last two minutes. His steal and layup with 1:45 left gave JMU a 72-66 lead; and after William & Mary scored four straight points, his three-pointer with 15 seconds left and the shot clock about to expire gave the Dukes a 75-70 advantage.
Outtz surpassed his previous JMU career scoring high of 27 points, set earlier during the season against East Carolina, and he set the mark in only 32 minutes. Freshman
David Fanning relieved Outtz at point guard for 16 minutes and had his best post-holiday-break effort with nine points and five assists.
Jamar Perry with 11 points was the only other double-figure scorer for JMU, which shot only 42.6 percent (26-61) overall but which hit on nine of 20 three-point tries (45.0 percent).
William & Mary also hit on nine of 20 three-point attempts (45.0 percent), and the Tribe shot 43.6 percent overall (24-55). Eighteen straight Tribe points from the 16:34 mark of the second half until 9:41 remained came on three-point field goals.
