HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/16/2000) –
Mickey Dennis had a JMU-career-high 17 points to lead five Dukes in double figures in scoring, and JMU rallied during the final 5:23 for a 70-64 victory after William & Mary erased a 17-point second-half deficit.
William & Mary used a 26-5 scoring run to lead 59-55 after trailing 50-33 with 15 minutes left, but JMU got points from five players the rest of the way while maintaining a tie for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Freshman forward
Pat Mitchell, who made his first college start, put the Dukes in front 60-59 with a layup with 2:45 left, and
Jamar Perry scored on consecutive JMU possessions to give the Dukes a 64-61 edge with 1:24 to play. A
Rob Strickland layup with 44 seconds left gave JMU a 66-61 lead, and
Tim Lyle hit on two free throws with 35 seconds left and
Jabari Outtz on one at the 23- and eight-second marks for JMU.
Dennis hit on four straight shots from the field and on five straight free throws while scoring 15 first-half points and helping JMU to a 40-26 halftime advantage. Strickland and Mitchell each had four points as JMU raised the lead to 50-33 with 15:10 left, but William & Mary had five three-point field goals during the next nine minutes.
Perry with 14 points, Mitchell and Outtz with 12 and Strickland with 11 joined Dennis in double figures in scoring for JMU. Outtz also had eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals and Dennis eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Perry hit on five of seven shots, including his only three-point try.
William & Mary got 15 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench from Mike Johnson and Scotty Scott. Johnson had four three-point field goals, and the Tribe hit on 10 of 25 three-point attempts overall. William & Mary got 34 points from its bench.
JMU hit on five of 12 three-point tries and had a 41-30 rebounding advantage. JMU shot 41.5 percent (22-53) overall and William & Mary 42.9 percent (21-49).
