Pat Mitchell had six points during a 12-0 second-half JMU scoring run, and the Dukes held Towson without a field goal for more than nine minutes of the final period in a 93-79 Dukes victory. The win allowed JMU to reach its best season wins total overall in six years and its best regular-season total in seven seasons.
Towson pulled into a 58-58 tie with 12:08 left on Raul dePablo's three-point field goal, the Tigers' 10th three-pointer of the game, but didn't get another field goal until the 2:54 mark. JMU led 83-65 by that point and had its 18th win of the season all but sealed.
Towson still was within 64-62 when Mitchell scored on a layup with 7:39 left. He added two free throws with 6:56 to play and two more with 5:36 remaining as JMU raised its lead to 76-62. The Dukes' largest margin was 92-72 with 55 seconds left.
Mitchell led JMU with a career-high 23 points off the bench, and
Jabari Outtz added 21 points,
Jamar Perry 19 and
Mickey Dennis 10 for the Dukes. JMU had a 35-21 rebounding edge and shot 56.9 percent (33-58), matching its season high. The Dukes hit on six of 13 three-point attempts and 21 of 23 free throws.
Mitchell played 27 minutes and hit on eight of 12 shots from the field and seven straight free throws. Outtz hit on eight of 16 shots overall and had 16 second-half points, and Perry hit on six of eight shots overall and had 15 first-half points.
Towson led 17-9 after six minutes, but JMU got points from six players during a 27-12 scoring run to lead 36-29 with 3:14 left in the first half. Towson got to within 42-38 by halftime and tied the score twice during the final half.
The Tigers hit on seven of 10 three-point attempts during the first half and on 12 of 21 overall. DePablo hit on six of 10 three-points tries and led Towson with 20 points.
