WILMNGTON, N.C. (2/7/2000) – North Carolina Wilmington held the Dukes to their lowest point total as an NCAA varsity program and won the teams' first 1999-2000 meeting 57-32. JMU also set a team record for fewest first-half points and tied team marks for poorest shooting percentage and fewest fields goals in a game while suffering only its second defeat during its last nine contests.
The Dukes shot 25.0 percent (11-44) overall and trailed 22-12 at halftime. UNC Wilmington reached its 10-point halftime margin with a three-pointer at the buzzer and after JMU got the first three points of the second half, raised the lead to 47-23 with 8:45 remaining.
JMU limited UNC Wilmington to 28.0 percent (7-25) shooting during the first half, but the Dukes during the opening period hit on only four of 22 shots (18.2 percent) and had 11 turnovers. UNC Wilmington shot 54.2 percent (13-24) during the second half and JMU 31.8 percent (7-22).
Guards Barron Thelmon and Brett Blizzard each had 10 points to lead UNC Wilmington. Thelmon had seven first-half points, including the Seahawks' three-pointer at the buzzer, and Blizzard had eight second-half points.
Jabari Outtz had eight points and
Tim Lyle five points and a career-high 11 rebounds for JMU.
JMU's previous lowest game scoring effort came in a 51-34 home loss to Virginia in 1982-83. Its previous low for points in a first half was 13 in a 66-40 loss at Virginia Tech in 1979-80. JMU also shot 25.0 percent from the field in a 73-42 loss at UNC Wilmington in 1997-98 and had 11 field goals in the 1982-83 game with Virginia.
