HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/31/2001) – Bo Jones' two free throws with 2:19 left in overtime put Virginia Commonwealth in front, and the Rams held JMU scoreless for the final 2:39 to win 73-70.
Jones, who led VCU with 17 points, gave the Rams a 72-70 lead with his free throws, and VCU got a free throw from Willie Taylor with 21.8 seconds left for its final margin.
JMU scored on its first four overtime possessions but didn't get another point after
Tim Lyle's three free throws pulled it into a 70-70 tie with 2:39 left.
David Fanning, who had a career-high 20 points for JMU, missed on a three-point try and the Dukes had a turnover before they got a final possession after Taylor's free throw with 21.8 seconds left. VCU's L.F. Likcholitov blocked a three-point try by Fanning out of bounds with 1.5 seconds left, and JMU's
Dwayne Braxton missed on a desperation three-point try at the buzzer.
Fanning's three-pointer with 19.7 left in regulation tied the score at 60-60, but JMU never led in overtime. Likcholitov scored off a rebound on VCU's first possession of the extra period, and Jones and LaMar Taylor had three-pointers for the Rams before Jones' key free throws.
VCU scored 11 straight points to take a 19-8 lead with 10:10 left during the first half, but JMU used a 14-3 scoring burst to pull into a 22-22 tie at the 4:10 mark. VCU led 32-26 at halftime and 45-38 with 11:22 left, but a 13-2 scoring run, including two three-pointers by
Charlie Hatter, gave JMU a 51-47 lead with 7:14 left.
VCU rallied to lead 58-54 with 3:10 left on a three-point play, a three-point field goal and an assist on another field goal by Konstantin Nesterov and led 60-57 on Likcholitov's dunk off a rebound with 2:26 left.
Willie Taylor and Likcholitov added 12 points for VCU. Likcholitov also had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Fanning hit on eight of 19 shots, including on four of 14 three-point tries.
Chris Williams and
Tim Lyle added 11 points for JMU, and
Pat Mitchell had 11 rebounds.
VCU shot 45.0 percent overall (27-60) and 34.8 percent (8-23) from three-point range. JMU shot 36.5 percent overall (23-63) and 28.0 percent (7-25) from three-point range. The Dukes hit on 17 of 20 free throws, had a 40-36 rebounding edge and committed nine turnovers to VCU's 10.
