JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (12/15/2001) – Dimeco Childress scored 25 points, and East Tennessee State pulled away during the second half to beat JMU 84-57.
Childress hit on nine of 14 shots and had two three-point field goals to lead three Buccaneers in double figures in scoring. Jerald Fields added 15 points and Zakee Wadood 12 points and seven rebounds as East Tennessee State raised its record to 5-3.
JMU cut a 12-point deficit to four points late during the first half but trailed 41-33 at halftime and then saw East Tennessee State score the first seven points of the second half for a 48-33 margin with 16:39 remaining. The Buccaneers led 61-48 with eight minutes to play before scoring 10 straight points for 71-48 advantage with 5:48 left and holding JMU to but four field goals the rest of the way. The Dukes hit on but eight of 31 shots during the second half (25.8 percent).
JMU shot only 34.4 percent (22-64) overall, hit on but four of 22 three-point attempts and was successful on only nine of 17 free throws. East Tennessee State shot 52.5 percent (32-61) after no JMU's opponent since its opener at North Carolina (four games) had shot as well as 39 percent. JMU also had a season-high 23 turnovers.
David Fanning led JMU with 16 points, including 13 during the second half, and was the Dukes' top scorer for the sixth straight 2001-02 game.
Pat Mitchell added 15 points and 11 rebounds – his third double-figure rebounding effort of the season and his second scoring-rebounding double-double – and
Chris Williams had 11 points for the Dukes. Mitchell had 13 first-half points.
