David Fanning,
Dwayne Broyles and
Chris Williams combined for 49 points, and JMU held on to beat Hofstra 65-58.
Fanning had a game-high 20 points, Broyles 15 and Williams 14. Williams and Broyles each hit on two free throws during the final 11.7 seconds to preserve JMU's lead after Hofstra cut a 13-point halftime deficit to 61-58.
Williams hit on both attempts of a one-and-one free throw chance with 11.7 seconds to play; and after a Hofstra turnover, Broyles converted on both attempts of a one-and-one opportunity with 7.1 seconds remaining.
JMU held Hofstra to 25 percent shooting (7-28) during the first half and led 33-20 at the break and 53-38 with 11:23 to play before getting only four more field goals.
JMU still led 57-47 with 4:38 left on a Fanning field goal, but Hofstra got two three-point field goals, the second by Woody Souffrant with 13 seconds left, to get to within 61-58.
JMU shot 43 percent (24-56) to Hofstra's 33 percent (20-60). JMU had a 39-38 rebounding advantage to become the first team to out-rebound Hofstra during the season. The Dukes hit on four of 19 three-point attempts and Hofstra on five of 23.
Fanning hit on nine of 19 shots and had 10 of JMU's last 24 points. He also had three rebounds and an assist. Broyles had three first-half three-pointers and 11 points before the break, and Williams had two field goals during the final eight minutes in addition to his key free throws. Williams also had three assists.
Kenny Whitehead and
Ian Caskill each added seven points, and Whitehead had a game-high-tying eight rebounds for JMU.
Pat Mitchell also had eight rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench for the Dukes.
Hofstra got 15 points each from Kenny Adeleke and Mike Radziejewski.
