CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (12/16/2003) – Virginia took control with a 33-11 scoring burst midway through the game and held off a late JMU rally for a 90-80 victory.
The teams were tied at 22 with less than eight minutes left in the first half, and JMU had had several chances to go ahead before Virginia dominated the remainder of the half and the opening minutes of the final period while taking a 55-33 advantage.
Virginia raised the margin to 67-38 with 12:19 remaining but had to a survive a late JMU scoring run.
Ray Barbosa and
Dwayne Broyles led a rally that pulled JMU to within 79-68 with 3:38 remaining and to within 81-71 with 2:45 left, but the Dukes got no closer.
Barbosa finished with 33 points, including 23 during the final half, and Broyles had 23 overall and 20 during the final period. Barbosa hit on 12 of 23 shots overall and had five three-point field goals, and Broyles hit on five three-point field goal attempts during final half and on six overall. Barbosa scored 10 straight JMU points early during the second half, and Broyles had 11 straight Dukes' points and 13 of 15 by his team later during the period.
JMU shot 56.3 percent (18-32) during the second half and hit on 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) three-point attempts during the final period. The Dukes' 13 three-pointers overall (28 attempts) tied a team record accomplished twice previously. JMU shot only 34.4 percent (11-32) overall during the first half.
The Dukes still trailed 76-52 with 7:29 to play before Broyles led a 19-5 scoring JMU scoring run with three three-pointers during a 1:20 span. Barbosa added a two-pointer and five free throws and Chris Clarke a three-pointer to get the Dukes to within 81-71 with 2:45 remaining.
Virginia's Elton Brown broke the JMU surge with a field goal with 2:20 to play for an 83-71 Cavalier lead, and the Dukes got only three more field goals.
JMU trailed 11-2 after just more than two minutes but got to within 20-19 by the 10:03 mark of the first half and tied the score at 20 on a
Chris Williams free throw at the 8:24 mark. The Dukes tied the score again at 22 on a field goal by
Eddie Greene-Long at the 7:17 mark, but Brown had nine points to spark a 21-6 Virginia run to close the first half. The Cavaliers then began the second half with a 10-2 burst to lead 53-30 with 16:52 remaining.
Barbosa's scoring effort was the best by a JMU freshman since William Davis (1988-93) had 34 points in a 1988 game at Virginia Tech. Sherman Dillard (1973-78), JMU's head coach during the 2003-04 season, set the team freshman scoring mark of 38 points in a 1974 game at Valdosta State.
Virginia put four players in double figures in scoring, including guard Todd Billet with 20 points, and frontcourt performers Devin Smith and Brown with 19 each. Brown also had nine rebounds, including seven offensively.
Barbosa and Broyles were JMU's only double-figure scorers, but the Dukes got eight points and 11 rebounds from
Chris Cathlin.
