Ian Caskill had six quick points as JMU took an 11-0 lead and then went on to an 87-56 victory over Towson.
After
David Fanning gave JMU a 2-0 lead on a 12-footer 10 seconds into the game, Caskill had three straight field goals from close range and
Dwayne Broyles a three-pointer for an 11-0 Dukes' advantage with 16:11 left in the first half.
JMU, which snapped a two-game losing streak, led 28-14 with 9:15 left in the half and 45-28 at halftime. The Dukes used 11 players during the opening period, and eight scored with Caskill and Broyles both finishing the first 20 minutes with nine points.
The Dukes continued to cruise during the second half, never allowing the Tigers to get closer than 15 points. The lead more than doubled during the final 10 minutes, reaching 83-50 when
John Naparlo hit on a three-pointer from the left wing.
JMU's
Kenny Whitehead and Broyles shared game-high scoring honors with Towson's Tony Dixon with 14 points. Caskill had 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Fanning and
Wes Miller added 11 points each to the Dukes' balanced scoring attack.
Each of the JMU's 13 players available for the game played, and 12 scored.
JMU shot 50 percent (33-66) overall and 40 percent (10-25) from three-point range, had a 35-26 rebounding advantage, blocked seven shots and had 12 steals. Towson shot 44.9 percent overall (22-49) but committed 24 turnovers, matching the most by a JMU opponent during the season (Hofstra also had 24 in a 75-69 JMU home win Feb. 1).
JMU's 87 points were its most against a Division I foe since beating Virginia Military 94-84 Dec. 29, 2001, and the 31-point victory margin was its largest in Colonial Athletic Association play since beating William & Mary 99-66 Feb. 13, 1993 at home.
The Dukes set season highs for field goals, field goal attempts and assists (20).
