WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (3/1/2003) – Adam Hess had 29 points, including a dunk that put his team in front to stay with 42 seconds left, as William & Mary rallied past JMU 75-72 in the Dukes' final regular-season game.
Hess' dunk gave the Tribe a 73-72 lead, and William & Mary's Brett Howell hit on two free throws with 10.8 seconds left for the final margin. JMU had a turnover with 12.4 seconds remaining, and the Dukes'
David Fanning couldn't convert on two contested three-point attempts during the closing seconds.
JMU rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit to within 46-43 by halftime. The Dukes then scored the first seven points of the final half and led for much of the period. However, JMU didn't score after
Ian Caskill's field goal gave the Dukes a 72-68 lead with 5:49 to play.
William & Mary hit on 24 of 44 shots (54.5 percent) and became the first 2002-03 JMU opponent to shoot as well as 50 percent from the field. The Tribe also had eight three-pointers and outscored JMU 19-5 from the foul line.
Fanning had 24 points and Caskill 14 for JMU, which shot 49.2 percent (30-61).
