NORFOLK, Va. (2/11/2004) – Old Dominion's Alex Loughton had game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, and John Waller had three three-point field goals early during the second half as the Monarchs rallied to beat JMU 71-57.
Loughton hit on seven of 11 shots from the field and on nine of 10 free throws. Waller finished with 18 points, including 15 on three-pointers. His three three-pointers during the opening seven minutes of the second half allowed Old Dominion to go from a 30-29 halftime deficit to a 43-37 lead. The Monarchs' advantage reached 56-45 before JMU pulled to within 58-52, but Waller then hit for his fourth three-pointer of the half for a 61-52 Old Dominion edge.
Old Dominion took a 19-11 lead by the 9:25 mark of the first half, but JMU outscored the Monarchs 19-6 during the next 6:28 to lead 30-25. Old Dominion went in front 32-30 on Waller's first three-pointer of the final half with 19:11 left and went in front to stay 38-37 with 14:42 remaining on his second three-pointer of the period. JMU's last lead was 37-35 on
Daniel Freeman's three-pointer with 15:10 remaining.
Old Dominion hit on six of nine three-point tries during the final half and on nine of 22 attempts overall, and the Monarchs connected on 14 of 18 free throws. JMU missed on its only free throw of the game and was out-rebounded 46-26.
Old Dominion shot 48 percent during the second half 13-27 and 44 percent (24-55) overall. JMU shot 42 percent (14-33) during the first half and 40 percent (26-65) overall.
Freeman led JMU with 16 points and seven rebounds, and he was the team's top scorer for the third straight game. He also had four steals.
Dwayne Broyles added 15 points and
Chris Williams 10 for the Dukes. Williams hit on five of seven shots and also had two rebounds and three assists.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for JMU, which was playing for the third time in five days.
