#17 FIELD HOCKEY SHUTS OUT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH 4-0

HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 2, 2005 --JMU freshman Lauren Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored the final goal with 12:40 remaining in the second half to bring the 17th-ranked Dukes to a 4-0 shutout of Virginia Commonwealth in Colonial Athletic Association field hockey Sunday afternoon.

The victory over VCU brought the Dukes' record to 6-5 overall and a 2-0 record in the CAA. VCU is 3-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Freshman Ashley Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) got the Dukes rolling when she took a quick short pass from red-shirt junior Maureen Klingler (State College, Pa./State College) and tipped the ball into the left corner with 28:26 left in the first half.

With 20:41 left in the second half sophomore Mallory Counihan (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) picked up where Ashley Walls left off and made an unassisted goal in between VCU's freshman goalkeeper Laura Baker's (Kent, England/Langley Park) legs.

Midway through the second half, junior Baillie Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominion Convent) made a shot that bounced up into the left corner of the goal off a penalty corner. Versfeld's goal was assisted by Ashley Walls and sophomore Lauren Stefaniak (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West).

Lauren Walls cleaned up when the ball was sent up midfield and passed to Maureen Klinger. Klingler sent a short pass to Lauren Walls who beat the Ram's senior goalkeeper Becca Leuzzi (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) with a seven-yard shot to the left corner.
