HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 28, 2005 -- Hofstra junior Leslie DeSimone (Roseland, N.J./Mount Olive) had a goal and two assists Friday night to lead the Pride to a 3-1 win over 19th-ranked James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association field hockey at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
Hofstra improved to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. JMU is 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the CAA.
The Pride trailed 1-0 after JMU freshman Melissa Stefaniak (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored with 15:45 remaining in the opening period.
Hofstra evened the game minutes later when freshman Charlia Warner (Bridgetown, Barbados/Springer Memorial) scored on a six-yard shot off a pass from DeSimone with 11:54 left.
The Pride took a 2-1 lead into intermission after junior Doni-Melissa Jantzen (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored on a penalty corner. The goal came after time expired. DeSimone got her second assist of the night on the goal.
DeSimone completed the night's scoring with a goal on a penalty-corner play with 10:32 remaining in the second period. Sophomore Pemba Ramdoo (Diego Martin, Trinidad/South East Spain ) was credited with an assist.
JMU held a 15-9 advantage on shots on goal, but Hofstra took nine corners to five for JMU. Hofstra junior goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) finished with six saves, while JMU red-shirt senior goalkeeper Lori Amico (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) recorded four saves.
