HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 7, 2005 -- Sophomore Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) scored 21 points while pulling down a season high 14 rebounds to lead James Madison (5-1) to a 76-60 win over Longwood (2-6) in women's basketball Wednesday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU junior Lesley Dickinson (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) led all scorers with a season high 22 points while shooting 10-for-14 from the field. Junior Andrea Benvenuto (Ancaster, Ontario/St. Mary's) tied her career high with 11 points and had a season high eight assists for the Dukes.
Leading by just one point (16-15 at 12:30), JMU scored 10 straight points to take a 26-15 lead with 7:19 left in the first half
The Dukes opened the second half with an 11-2 scoring run to push their lead to 45-31 at 17:47. In that span JMU hit three three-pointers, two by Dickinson and one by Young.
Longwood closed to within six points (51-45 at 13:01) after outscoring JMU 12-2 in under three minutes. Senior Ashley Mason (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scored the first six points and freshman Cassandra Smith (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) the last five for the Lancers.
Longwood scored only one point in three minutes while JMU scored 12 points to push their lead to 17 (63-46) at 9:17 to put the game away.
Three Longwood players reached double figures with Mason scoring 17 points, senior Amber Mason (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scoring 16 and Smith adding another 10.
The victory is the fourth straight for JMU while Longwood suffered its fourth straight loss.
