Barbosa's deep three came on an assist from junior point guard Jomo Belfor (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and gave the Dukes a 71-70 lead.
On the ensuing Lancer possession, sophomore guard Michael Jefferson (Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) worked the clock down high in the frontcourt before driving for a shot over Belfor from just inside the right side of the lane. Jefferson's shot came off the left side of the rim and was rebounded by LU freshman forward Lamar Barrett (Providence, R.I./St. Andrews School). Barrett's stick-back caught the rim but tumbled off.
JMU sophomore Chris Cathlin (Virginia Beach, Va./Shenandoah Valley Academy) came out of the pack with the rebound and a foul sent him for a two-shot bonus with 1.8 seconds to go. He hit the first, missed the second, but deflected the desperation heave by junior center Chad Kosmo (Northport, Maine/Maine Central Institute) to end the game.
Longwood sophomore guard Husein Pistoljevic (Richland, Wash./Hanford) had hit on four of six three-point tries and was fouled on a seventh attempt with 2:01 remaining. He swished the net on all three of his free throws, tying the contest at 68.
JMU sophomore forward Cavell Johnson (Middleburg, Va./Notre Dame Academy) missed a dunk on JMU's next possession, and the ball went out of bounds and over to the Lancers. Barrett's layup with 1:05 showing gave the visitors a 70-68 lead before Barbosa hit the game-winner.
Johnson and Belfor led all players with 18 points. Johnson hauled in a game-best nine rebounds, just missing his fourth scoring-rebounding "double-double" of the year. Belfor doled out four assists.
The Lancers got 17 points apiece from Jefferson and sophomore Maurice Sumter (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), the later of whom took in a team-high eight rebounds. Pistoljevic finished with 15 points.
Longwood out-rebounded JMU 35-31, but the Dukes shot 49.1 percent (26-53) to the Lancers' 40.7 percent (24-59). LU was good on seven of 13 first-half three pointers but trailed 40-35 at the half.
The Dukes led by as many as eight, 46-38, three minutes into the second half. However, the Lancers charged back with a 10-0 run to take a brief lead. JMU led 68-62 before Pistoljevic hit a trey and then his three free throws.
