TOWSON, Md., Feb. 24, 2005 –- Sophomores Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and Lesley Dickinson (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) turned in double-doubles to lead James Madison (10-6, 17-8) to a 73-61 win over Towson (7-9, 14-13) in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday night at the Towson Center.
Dickinson led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds. Alexis had 18 points and 16 rebounds to post her fourth consecutive double-double and her 11th double-double of the season. She hit eight of 10 field-goal attempts and was two-for-three at the foul line.
JMU never trailed in the game but had to fend off Towson throughout the night. The Dukes jumped off to a 10-2 lead and led by eight points on three other occasions in the first half. However, the Tigers twice trimmed the lead to one, the last time at 26-25 with 3:20 remaining.
The Dukes were up by six (34-28) at halftime, but the Tigers scored the first four points of the second half to close the score to 34-32 at 13:39. JMU ran off eight straight points to push its lead to 10, 44-34, at 14:43. After that, Towson got no closer than six (46-40 at 13:39) the rest of the way.
Towson missed its first 13 shots from the field and shot a season-low 27.3 percent (18-66) from the field. The Dukes connected on 46.7 percent (28-60) from the field and out-rebounded the Tigers 56-36.
Two other Dukes scored in double figures as sophomore Shirley McCall (Collinsville, Va./Bassett) and freshman Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) each netted 12 points.
Towson was led by Alis Freeman, who scored 14 points, eight of which came at the foul line. also in double figures were Kelli Talbot and Tierra Jackson, each with 12 points.
It was the sixth straight win for the Dukes.
