LONGWOOD SLIPS PAST DUKES ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND, 6-5
FARMVILLE, Va., April 19, 2005 – Longwood overcame a 5-1, fifth-inning deficit and trimmed James Madison 6-5 in non-conference college baseball Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Stadium.
Freshman right fielder Louis Ullrich (Centreville, Va./Westfield) raced home with the decisive run in the sixth inning on a swinging bunt by freshman first baseman Travis Lydon (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward). Ullrich, who got the Lancers on the board with a two-out solo homer in the fourth, singled to start the sixth inning and moved to third on a double by senior second baseman Robert Gillis (Darthmouth, Nova Scotia/Auburn Drive).
Longwood tied the game with a four-run fifth that featured only two singles, the first by senior left fielder Chris Balus (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) that drove in the first run of the frame. After a passed ball allowed the Lancer's third run of the game to score, sophomore catcher Tyler Childress (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) hit into a groundout that pushed across another run. The tying run came in on a wild pitch. Two of the runners who scored had been hit by a pitch.
JMU broke out on top when junior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) tripled down the line in right with the bases loaded in the third. Cowgill scored on freshman designated hitter Kellen Kulbacki's (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) 15th double of the season.
Cowgill also singled to start the fifth inning and came around to score on the third of four singles by junior catcher Matt Sluder (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis). Sluder's four-hit game was the third of his career and the second in four games.
Redshirt sophomore left-hander Brett Mangigian (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) kept the Dukes in check over the final 3 2/3 innings with two-hit shutout relief. He did not walk a batter and fanned two while upping his record to 2-0. The Dukes had banged out 11 hits before Mangigian took the mound.
Cowgill finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kulbacki, freshman right fielder Ryan Reid (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore third baseman Rob Altieri (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) each had two hits for the Dukes.
JMU fell to 15-21 with its third consecutive loss and its first loss in eight meetings all time against Longwood. The Lancers improved to 14-23.
The Dukes' next contest will be Wednesday at home against the University of Richmond Spiders at 3 p.m. The Dukes won this season's earlier game, 5-1, on April 13 in Richmond. |
