DUKE DOG STATUE ADDED TO PLECKER CENTER COURTYARD
HARRISONBURG (8/19/05) – A bronze statue of James Madison University's Duke Dog mascot has been added to the courtyard area in front of the recently completed Robert and Frances Plecker Athletic Performance Center.
The statue, donated by University Outpost in Harrisonburg, is atop a two-foot concrete pedestal in the Dean and Joanne Ehlers Community Plaza. The statue is approximately five feet tall and seven feet long and weighs approximately one ton. It is a similar in design to a smaller Duke Dog statue located in a lobby area of the JMU Convocation Center.
The Plecker Center is located adjacent to the east end zone at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field, JMU's football facility.
The Duke Dog statue originally arrived at JMU during the spring and briefly was placed in the Plecker Center courtyard area. However, it was determined at that time that the statue would be most appropriately displayed atop a pedestal.
Paver stones with the names of contributors to the Plecker Center building project are being located around the pedestal supporting the Duke Dog statue.
Other final touches are being made to the Center, which houses most of JMU's football-related activities, an academic support area for all of the University's 28 intercollegiate athletic teams, and state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength and conditioning facilities.
Murals depicting key events and individuals in JMU's athletic history have been added to the hall of fame area on the Plecker Center's second level. The area also includes a listing of JMU's athletic hall of fame members, a display case with the Dukes' national championship trophies from football in 2004 and field hockey in 1994, a letter of commendation of the championship football team from President Bush, and several of the football team's championship rings.
Displays recognizing contributors to the Plecker Center project are located on in the first-floor lobby area of the facility.
