Harrisonburg, Va. (8/31/2005) - The James Madison University field hockey team improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2002, besting the Radford Highlanders 2-0 Wednesday evening at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
Sophomore Mallory Counihan (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and red-shirt junior Maureen Klingler (State College, Pa./State College) each found the back of the cage for JMU, and the Dukes once again played stifling defense, limiting the Highlanders (0-2) to one shot for the contest.
The Dukes have held two consecutive opponents to a single shot, posting the same performance against Longwood last Sunday.
Counihan opened the scoring with 12:44 remaining in the opening half, collecting freshman Melissa Stefaniak's (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) pass off a penalty corner and beating Radford goalkeeper Amy Dietz for her second goal of the season.
With 4:01 remaining in the contest, Klingler took junior Baillie Versfeld's (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominion Convent) pass at the top of the circle and fired a shot past Dietz, icing the game for JMU.
Red-shirt senior goalkeeper Lori Amico (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) picked up her third shutout of the season, her first solo after splitting time the first two games with sophomore goalkeeper Merel Broekhuizen (Groningen, The Netherlands/Maartens College).
The Dukes return to action September 5, taking on North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
