After a defensive stalemate most of the first half, Penn State's first goal came from Long at the 43-minute mark to send the Lions into halftime leading, 1-0. Long received the pass in traffic from Jean Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa.) on the score, the first of her career. The goal would also be the gamewinner, marking the second time in two games a defender netted the first goal of her career and that it was the Lions' gamewinner. On Friday, Denay Riley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) lent her first career goal in Penn State's 3-0 win over Maryland and it was also the gamewinner.
The score remained a 1-0 Penn State lead most of the second half as well, until Penn State's final tally of the day was scored by senior striker Tiffany Weimer (North Haven, Conn.) on a short pass from classmate Carmelina Moscato (Mississaugua, Ontario) as the second half wound down with 3:40 left. The goal continued Weimer's goal-scoring streak. She has scored at least one goal in every game this season and is currently 11 shy of holding the Big Ten career goals record, which is currently held by 2001 Hermann Trophy winner and Penn State volunteer assistant coach Christie Welsh.
The Nittany Lions dominated the defensive side of the field, with goalkeeper Erin Mcleod (Vancouver, B.C.) keeping the Dukes scoreless with her aggressive play and the help of a strong defensive line.
