HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 21, 2005 -- The 19th-ranked James Madison field hockey team improved to 5-3, defeating 16th-ranked Richmond 1-0 Wednesday evening at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Dukes scored with 16:21 remaining in the opening period, and held off several Spider scoring attempts in the final minutes to snap Richmond's four game winning streak.
Junior Baillie Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominion Convent) gathered in red-shirt junior Maureen Klingler's (State College, Pa./State College) pass and found the cage from the top of the circle after freshman Ashley Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) started the corner play.
The Spiders (5-3) outshot JMU 8-4 and won six penalty corners to the Dukes two, but JMU consistently turned them away, once again playing stifling defense and allowing only one shot to even reach red-shirt senior goalkeeper Lori Amico (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), who recorded her third solo shutout of the season.Â
The Dukes host fifth-ranked Duke Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
