NEWARK, Del. Jan. 19, 2006 – Senior forward Harding Nana (Douala, Cameroon/Newport School) and senior guard Rulon Washington (Jacksonville, Fla./White) combined for 23 points while Delaware was building a 44-26 halftime lead, and the host Blue Hens went on to beat James Madison 95-68 in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Thursday.
Nana had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Washington came off the bench to score 11 points on four-of-five shooting from the field to spark Delaware to its early advantage. The Blue Hens shot 51.7 percent (15-29) from the field and took advantage of nine JMU turnovers during the first half. JMU shot only 31.4 percent (11-35) from the field and hit on only three of nine free throws during the opening half.
Delaware expanded the lead to 53-26 with a 9-0 scoring run to start the second period and led by at least 25 points the rest of the way. JMU's first second-half points came at the 14:57 mark, and the Blue Hens' largest lead was 89-49 with 3:50 remaining.
Delaware broke a five game losing streak and improved to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the CAA. JMU fell to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
The Blue Hens shot 55.2 percent (32-58) overall to JMU's 38.5 percent (25-65). They also had 10 three-point field goals to JMU's four and hit on 21 of 29 free throws.
Nana finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds and led four Delaware players in double figures in scoring. He hit on seven of 10 shots and had two three-point field goals. Washington added 17 points and hit on four three-pointers. Herb Courtney added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Raphael Madera 11 points for Delaware.
Freshman forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) led JMU with 16 points on seven-of-11 shooting. Freshman guard Joe Posey (Colonial Beach, Va./Notre Dame Academy) was the only other Duke in double figures in scoring with 10 points. Posey hit on four of six shots, including a three-point attempt, in five minutes. His points came during the game's 3:18, andhe established a JMU career scoring high.
JMU returns to action Saturday (Jan. 21) in a 7:30 p.m. game at CAA foe Virginia Commonwealth.
