HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 23, 2006 — Old Dominion made good on nine of its first 10 shots, including six consecutive three-point attempts to build a 26-12 lead and went on to defeat James Madison 75-58 in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Thursday night at the JMU Convocation Center.
ODU improved to 20-8 overall and to 12-5 in the CAA, clinching fourth place and a first-round bye for the CAA Championship Tournament, which begins March 3 at the Richmond Coliseum. The Dukes fell to 5-21 overall, 2-15 in the league and will be seeded 12th in the tournament. JMU will face fifth-seeded Northeastern in a first-round game at 2:30 p.m. March 3. The regular season ends Saturday, Feb. 25 with JMU playing at George Mason and ODU at Delaware. The seeding will not be effected by the outcomes.
The Monarchs finished the first half 15-for-25 overall, 60%, and 8-for-15, 53.3%, on three-pointers.
Junior forward Arnaud Dahi (Ivory Coast, Africa) led four Monarchs in double figures with 14 and pulled in six rebounds Thursday night. Senior center Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) added 13 points and pulled in a game-high nine rebounds. ODU also got 12 points and seven assists from junior guard Drew Williamson (Burlington, N.C.) and 11 from junior forward Valdas Vasylius (Klaipeda, Lithuania).
JMU senior guard Daniel Freeman (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) tallied a game-high 15 points in his final home appearance. Freshman forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) dropped in 11 points. Freeman, James and freshman guard Lewis Lampley (St. Petersburg, Fla./Admiral Farragut) each had five rebounds.
JMU junior guard Ray Barbosa (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) reached the 1,000-career-point milestone with a trey at the 6:55 mark of the first half. He's the 22nd player in JMU basketball history to surpass the mark.
