With the scored tied at 2, Garner was called upon with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, despite still recovering from a sprained right ankle. He bounced a grounder to the right of GWU junior shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, Mass./Newton South), who threw to second base for a force out. The throw to first for the potential inning-ending double play bounced in the dirt and Garner's hustle and head-first slide insured the Dukes would take a 3-2 lead.
Redshirt freshman designated hitter Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) then stepped to the plate and grounded a single up the middle, driving in what proved to be the final run of the game.
Wood gave up a one-out double in the eighth, snapping his stretch of retiring eight in a row. He then sat down the next two, and in all retired 16 of the 22 batters he faced. He scattered four hits, walked the first two batters he faced and struck out two.
The Colonials got the tying run to the plate in the ninth thanks to junior designated hitter Jeremy Hall (Houston, Texas/Magnolia), who capped a single to left on a 1-2 pitch from Wood.
Junior right-hander Clay McKim (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) came on to squelch the Colonials with a flyout to right field and a 6-4-3 double play. McKim earned his second save and helped Wood's record move along to 2-0.
The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the second as junior shortstop Rob Altieri (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored on senior left fielder Matt Bristow's (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) sacrifice fly to center field.
The Colonials scored both of their runs in the third, the first on an RBI single by senior third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, N.Y./Pine Plains) and the second when senior center fielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) walked with the bases loaded.
Senior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and senior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) hit back-to-back singles with one out in the JMU fifth. Cowgill advanced to third on Schill's second hit of the afternoon and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by senior catcher Matt Sluder (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) to pulled the Dukes even.
Redshirt sophomore center fielder Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach), Cowgill and Schill, the first three hitters in the order, each collected a pair of singles. Schill extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
GWU tried twice to take a lead in the first inning, but had two runners thrown out at the plate. Altieri gunned down Parker from shallow left field after sophomore Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) looped a single to left that bounced away from Bristow as he dove for
