ATLANTA, Ga., April 8, 2006 – Jamie Cagle hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Georgia State over the James Madison softball team 7-5 in game two of a doubleheader. The Lady Panthers also defeated the Dukes in game one by a score of 5-4.
Georgia State took the lead in game one in the second inning on a solo home run by Nichole Griffin. The Lady Panthers added two more runs in the inning on another home run by Alison Bradford to up its lead to 3-0.
The Georgia State offense continued to put runs on the board as Jackie Jeagle drove in Sara Berzofsky in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to make the score 5-0.
JMU (16-17, 3-5 CAA) climbed back into the game in the seventh inning when senior Briana Carrera (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. After a single by junior Sally Smith (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) freshman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Co.) put the Dukes on the board with single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Krista Landing (Eureka, Calif./St. Bernard).
Georgia State (16-21, 7-1 CAA) starting pitcher Elizabeth Hyman then retired the next two batters to bring up senior Megan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View). Smith kept the inning alive for the Dukes with a single through the left-side of the infield to load the bases for freshman Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View).
Dominguez followed Smith with a single of own, sending the Hyman offering to the center-field gap, scoring pinch runner Katie Schray (Stephen's City, Va./Sherando) and Kirk. Junior Tamara Carrera (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) plated another run for the Dukes with an RBI single to left to cut the Georgia State lead to 5-4.
Dominguez finished 2-for-2 at the plate for the Dukes with two RBIs.
After a walk to pinch hitter Whitney Eye (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), Hyman (9-8) closed out the game for GSU by getting Landing to strike out swinging, clinching the 5-4 win for the Lady Panthers.
Felts (8-6) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking three in the loss.
In game two, sophomore Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) put JMU up 1-0 with her third home run of the season, a solo blast over the right-field fence.
GSU answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a couple of JMU errors and then added two more on a home run by Griffin to make the score 4-1. With the bases loaded, junior Renee' Bounds (Denton, Md./North Caroline) came in relief of Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and got Candace Jones to ground into the inning ending double play.
The Dukes closed the gap with two runs of its own in the top of the sixth to shrink the GSU lead to 4-3. Bounds then shut down the Lady Panther bats in the home half of the inning to bring the Dukes to bat in the top of the seventh down only one.
Chavez and junior Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) led off the inning for JMU with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with no outs. Georgia State then elected to intentionally walk Dominguez, but Meghan McCoy overthrew catcher Jackie Jaegle with her second pitc
