Bain started the scoring with four minutes remaining in the first half with an unassisted goal and JMU (1-0) took the 1-0 edge into the break. In the second half, Kent State (0-1) found the equalizer on a goal by Kate Perry, assisted by Elizabeth Lahey.
Sophomore Melissa Stefaniak (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) struck for the game winner two minutes after the goal by the Golden Flashes. Sophomore Ashley Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) assisted on the goal. Bain put the match away with her second unassisted goal of the day with four minutes remaining.
Junior Merel Broekhuizen (Groningen, The Netherlands/Maartens College) and freshman Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) split time in goal with Cutchins picking up the victory in goal. Both had two saves. Kent State keeper Linz Markwart had 12 saves while playing all 70 minutes.
JMU dominated in shots 24-10. The Dukes also held a narrow edge 6-5 in penalty corners.
JMU will remain in Kent, Ohio to face Albany on Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning to Harrisonburg for the home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. against #5 North Carolina.
