HARRISONBURG, Va., March 15, 2007 – James Madison University football coach Mickey Matthews has announced the addition of an assistant and a change in assignments for two individuals already on his coaching staff. Joining the JMU staff as assistant defensive line coach is Isai Bradshaw, a former all-conference performer for the Dukes. Assignment changes for current staff members include Chris Malone assuming responsibility for the offensive line and Josh Haymore being named tight ends coach.
Bradshaw lettered for the Dukes as a linebacker and defensive end from 2002-05, was a member of JMU's 2004 national championship team, and took part in 270 career tackles, including 12.5 quarterback sacks. As a senior defensive end in 2005 he was second-team All-Atlantic 10 Conference after taking part in 32 tackles, including nine for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks. He was involved in 35 tackles in 2004 and 109 and 94, respectively, in 2002 and 2003 as a linebacker.
"Isai worked with our coaching staff during last spring's practice period and expressed a desire to join our staff whenever we had an opening," Matthews said. "He did a good job for us last spring, and his familiarity with our program is an asset."
Malone joined the JMU staff for the first time for the 2006 season when he coached the offensive tackles and tight ends and Chris Wiesehan directed the team's interior offensive linemen.
"Chris provides continuity with our offensive line," Matthews said of the former All-Big East Conference lineman at Virginia Tech. "He stepped in last season and worked well with Chris Wiesehan, and we expect him to give good leadership to our offensive front." Wiesehan recently accepted an assistant coach's position at Syracuse.
Haymore was a defensive line assistant for JMU last season after serving as a student-assistant coach in 2005 and playing for the Dukes from 2001-04. He was JMU's long snapper on special teams for four seasons, including during the team's 2004 national title campaign.
"Josh is very deserving of his position," Matthew said. "He has done a great job with every assignment we've given him during the last two seasons."
JMU is coming off a 9-3 season and a national playoff appearance in 2006. The Dukes during the last three seasons have compiled a 29-9 combined record and have received two playoff invitations.
JMU opens its 11-game 2007 schedule Sept. 1 at North Carolina. Its 2007 home opener will be Sept. 8 against New Hampshire in the Dukes' first game in Colonial Athletic Association football play. The CAA, beginning with the 2007 season, assumes operations of the former Atlantic 10 Football Conference.
JMU opens its 2007 spring practice period March 31 and will play its spring intra-squad game April. 21.
