HARRISONBURG, Va., April 21, 2007 ? The softball Dukes extended their winning streak to 11 games, the longest in the program's six-year history, with a pair of Colonial Athletic Association triumphs Saturday against visiting Drexel, 8-3 and 7-3.
JMU outscored Drexel 15-6 and hammered out 22 hits over the two games. The Dukes improved to 30-14 (10-3 CAA) while Drexel fell to 15-13 (6-7 CAA).
Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) had a home run in each game and hit a grand slam in game one.
Drexel got on the board first in game two in the top of the third. Brianne Brown hit a laser double down the left field line that plated two runs and gave the Dragons an early 2-0 lead.
The Dukes came back in the bottom of the third with five runs. Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) tripled to right-center and plated Brittney Lyddane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park). Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) followed up with an RBI single later in the inning and scored on an errant throw by the catcher. Lauren Mernin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) each added an RBI single to put the Dukes up three after three innings.
JMU added two in the fourth with a two-run home run (3) by Clohan to take a 7-2 lead.
The Dragons scored again the sixth when Kristen Beaver hit a sacrifice fly into foul territory down the right-field line which allowed Sandi Wambold to score but that would be the last run in a 7-3 victory for JMU.
Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) earned her 12th victory for JMU giving up three runs, on six hits, while striking out two in six innings of work. Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) pitched the final inning to secure the win.
Katrina Gaudier (8-5) took the loss for Drexel giving up seven runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits while striking out one.
In the first game of the twin bill, JMU scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Wernsing was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Simons came home. One batter latter George earned an RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk to plate another run for JMU. Drexel made a pitching change and brought in Katrina Gaudier. Clohan hit the first grand slam of the season for the Dukes and gave JMU a 6-0 lead after two innings.
The Dragons came back in the third with three runs off a pair of doubles. Lisa Williams hit an RBI double to left-center that plated teammate Kristen Beaver and Brianne Brown knocked in two runs with a double to center to cut the JMU lead in half.
The Dukes put up two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead off a George triple to right. Those two runs were the last of the game as JMU went on to win 8-3.
Clohan earned her 11th victory of the season in a complete-game effort. She gave up three runs, on five hits, while striking out five.
Amanda Shattuck (4-4) took the loss for Drexel giving up five runs, on three hits, whi
