HARRISONBURG, Va., June 28, 2007 ? The sport of volleyball is built on three basic principles ? bump, set, and spike. James Madison University hopes that fielding one of the best players in the conference at each skill will be a winning formula in 2007.
Colonial Athletic Association 2006 Coach of the Year Disa Garner put three players on the two all-conference teams in the league last year. All three return to provide a solid nucleus to build around in 2007, and they combine to make the Dukes a well-balanced team.
The bump aspect of the game will be handled by 2006 CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison). The senior libero was honored by Collegiate Volleyball Update as an honorable mention for national libero of the year honors, making her one of the top five at her position in the country. Pierson was the first libero ever to earn CAA First Team All-Conference and was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
After shattering the season digs record at JMU with 655, she enters her final campaign in Harrisonburg needing just 79 digs to tie the career mark of 1,491. She is already the school's career digs-per-game record holder. Pierson led the CAA by nearly a dig per game and will look to build on that resume to help the Dukes to a winning campaign in her senior year.
Pierson's defense will keep the ball in play for junior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep). Miles was CAA Second Team All-Conference, ranking only behind Hofstra rising senior Shellane Ogoshi in the setting department. She was also VaSID Second Team All-State.
Miles will look to improve upon the steady numbers she posted in her first year as the starter in 2006. As a sophomore, she averaged 12.92 assists per game, good for 30th in the nation. Her 13.13 assists per game in conference play led the CAA. In just two seasons, her 11.79 career assists per game would write her name in the JMU record books if she can maintain or improve upon those numbers. She also already ranks sixth in career assists with 1,639.
A frequent target for Miles in the spike category should be 6-3 middle blocker Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy). The imposing senior was CAA First Team All-Conference and VaSID First Team All-State in 2006. Along with Pierson, she was also named a “Stellar Spiker” by Collegiate Volleyball Update, ranking both among the top 80 players in the country. Particularly with the graduations of Hofstra's Elizabeth Curley and Towson's Christina Grempler, Halls should be considered among the best at her position in the CAA in 2007.
Halls averaged 4.02 kills, 1.03 blocks, and 4.88 points per game as the leading fin
