PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Sept. 28, 2007 ? James Madison University picked up its sixth shutout in 10 matches this season with a 1-0 win at Drexel University in Colonial Athletic Association field hockey action Friday night.
JMU, ranked seventh nationally in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the CAA, winning its third match in a row. Drexel fell to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference.
The Dukes came into the match ranked first in the nation in shutouts per game and increased that number to 0.60. Sophomore Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) picked up her third solo shutout of the season. JMU also ranked third in the nation in team goals against average and second in save percentage and improved those numbers to 0.78 and .870 respectively.
Junior Melissa Stefaniak (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had the lone goal for the Dukes 16 minutes into the match. It was her fifth goal of the season to tie for the team lead. She is also second on the team with two game-winning goals. Stefaniak took over the team lead in total points with 11.
Cutchins had four saves in goal for the Dukes. Colleen McAndrew had 10 saves in the cage for the Dragons. JMU led the contest in shots 15-6 and penalty corners 7-2.
JMU will be on the road on Sunday at Hofstra University at 1 p.m.
