HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 23, 2008 ? Junior guard Marc Egerson's three-point play with 0.5 seconds remaining lifted Delaware to a 66-65 victory over James Madison in Colonial Athletics Association men's basketball at the JMU Convocation Center Wednesday.
Egerson took an in-bounds pass from sophomore guard Brian Johnson and scored after being fouled cutting to the basket for a layup. He then added the decisive free throw, capping a rally that brought the visiting Blue Hens from a three-point deficit during the game's final 11.8 seconds.
Delaware improved to 9-9 overall and to 6-2 in the CAA with the win while JMU fell to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in the CAA.
JMU, which led 57-47 with 6:51 to play and didn't trail during the second half until Egerson's last-second free throw, led 65-62 on two free throws with 11.8 seconds left from sophomore guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East). However, Delaware senior forward Herb Courtney was fouled while attempting a three-point field goal with 2.4 seconds to play, setting up the Blue Hens' late rally.
Courtney hit the first free throw and missed the second before intentionally missing the third attempt. The third-shot rebound went out of bounds off a JMU player under Delaware basket giving Delaware possession for Egerson's three-point play.
JMU took its 57-47 lead on a three-point field goal by junior guard Abdulai Jalloh (District Heights, Md./National Christian Academy) but got only three more field goals.
Delaware got three-pointers from freshman guard D.J. Boney and Courtney and pulled to within 59-58 with 2:27 left. Jalloh scored on a driving 10-footer with 1:57 left for a 61-58 JMU lead, but Courtney hit on two free throws to cut the margin to 61-60 with 1:29 to play.
