HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 5, 2008 ? Senior Jamie Coyle (Rockville, Md./Wootton), freshman Morgan McCarthy (New Castle, Del./St. Mark's), and freshman Emily Konieczny (West Springfield, Mass./Granby) picked up individual victories as James Madison University fell to Northeastern University 172-121 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's swimming meet on Saturday in JMU's Savage Natatorium.
NU claimed 12 of 16 events to improve to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in CAA meets. The Huskies entered the meet ranked 11th in the CollegeSwimming.com mid-major poll. JMU dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the CAA.
Coyle set career marks in both the one-meter and three-meter boards. She won the one-meter dive with a mark of 235.00 while finishing fourth in the three-meter with a score of 244.20.
Konieczny won the 500-yard freestyle race in 5:11.56. She also set a personal best with a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard free in 10:46.38.
McCarthy won the 200 backstroke in 2:11.83.
Both JMU relay teams set top marks for the season. The 400-yard free relay team of sophomore Rachel Smith (Richmond, Va./Freeman), freshman Layne Eidemiller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), sophomore P.J. Naber (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly), and junior Meghan Heil (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) won the event in 3:39.67. The 200-yard medley relay team of McCarthy, freshman Lindsey Stevenson (Richmond, Va./Freeman), sophomore Christina Gennari (Westerville, Ohio/Trinity Catholic),and Naber placed second with a time of 1:51.42.
Northeastern sophomore Katharine Flugge and junior Elena Alvarez each claimed four event titles, including three individual victories. Flugge won the 200 free in 1:56.01, the 50 free in 24.95 seconds, and the 100 free in 53.81 seconds. Alvarez was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.06, the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.40, and the 200 individual medley in 2:12.84.
